Holland's Quest

Holland has never won the world's greatest football trophy, yet it has often fielded world-beating teams. This programme re-examines Holland's two most focused attempts in 1974 and 1978 to win the FIFA World Cup™, when the Dutch introduced for the first time the concept of "Total Football". The programme also explores how Holland has continually entertained and enthralled football fans at subsequent events, while the "Holy Grail" of football continues to elude its grasp.

African Odyssey

The spectacular rise of African football on the World Cup stage has led many to speculate when an African nation will win the FIFA World Cup™. From the difficult early lessons of the 1970's through to the emergence of the dazzling skills and flair of Cameroon, Morocco and Senegal, the story of a continent in waiting.

Young Shooting Stars

One of the most exciting aspects of this great event is that time and again it introduces a new cast of young football prodigies to a world audience. Pelé, Michael Owen, Maradona and Ronaldo are among those who made a global impact in their teens. This programme is a tribute to genius on the football field and makes full use of the Archive footage to remind us of the debut of some of football's greatest names.

FIFA World Cup™ Shocks

The unexpected is what makes football exciting. Highlighting the most surprising and shocking results in FIFA World Cup™ history from North Korea's humbling of mighty Italy in 1966 to Cameroon's explosive entrance onto the FIFA World Cup™ stage in 1990 with its victory over the holders Argentina this programme captures the moment, the effect and aftershock of the unexpected result.

Golden Boot Legends

Every FIFA World Cup™ tournament has a Golden Boot winner. Some, such as Ronaldo in 2002 and Gerd Muller in 1970, were not unexpected. But who could have predicted the impact that Paulo Rossi, Davor Sukur and Gary Lineker would have had on FIFA World Cup™ history.

Penalty Shoot-Out!

The drawn out agony of the penalty shoot out is the football equivalent to a duel, with sudden death waiting for one side or the other. No moments in football are more intense. This programme covers the dramatic finales of some great matches, where one kick of a ball can throw a nation into joy or despair and turn players from heroes to villains.
